Explore plants on Modoc Rim - Led by Sarah Malaby

  • June 01, 2024
  • 8:15 AM - 12:00 PM
  • 10 miles North of Klamath Falls off Highway 97

Modoc Rim is located along the eastern edge of Upper Klamath Lake and is currently ablaze with Oregon sunshine and other wildflowers. Come explore the 'shrubble' lands on the Fremont-Winema National Forest above Hagelstein Park.

Meeting Places:  To carpool, meet at the Klamath County Museum at 8:15. Otherwise, meet at Hagelstein County Park located about 10 miles north of Klamath Falls along Highway 97.

What to Expect:  We will do a quick look around Hagelstein Park, then head up Forest Road 9718 to Modoc Rim. This area contains a good diversity of wildflowers and shrubs commonly found in the hills around Klamath Falls, as well as species typically not encountered, such as mock orange, rockspirea, cascara, and skunkbush sumac.

What to Bring: This area is shrubby and cheatgrass is abundant this year; please wear hiking boots and long pants and leave pets at home. Water and a hat or sun screen are also recommended.

Physical Requirements:  We will hike relatively short distances (less than 1/2 mile) off road on rocky, uneven terrain with some steeper pitches.
